BAPTISMS
Thinking about Baptism?
Baptism: Beginning a New Life in Christ
Baptism is the rite of entry into the Church — the outward sign of a profound inward change. When we turn to Christ in faith and repentance, we are spiritually united to Jesus and become children of God the Father. Baptism marks the beginning of this new life.
The apostle Peter proclaimed: "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).
Through faith, repentance, and Baptism, God the Holy Spirit enlightens our minds and hearts, and we are born again to new life. It is not merely a ceremony — it is the moment we enter into a living relationship with Christ, committing to follow him in the fellowship of his Church.
Baptism or Christening — is there a difference?
You may have heard both words used. In short, they mean the same thing. "Christening" is simply the common everyday term for the same sacrament — the name comes from the fact that the person is received into the Christian family and, in the case of infants, given their Christian name. At St Augustine's we use both terms interchangeably, and you are equally welcome whichever word you use when you get in touch.
Baptism for Infants, Children, and Adults
The majority of baptisms at St Augustine's are for infants and young children, and families are warmly welcomed. When parents bring a child for baptism, they are making a promise on their child's behalf — to raise them in the Christian faith, to pray with them, and to bring them to worship so that in time the child may come to own that faith for themselves.
Adults are equally welcomed for baptism. If you have come to faith in Christ and have never been baptised, or are exploring what it means to make a public commitment to following Jesus, we would love to speak with you. Adult baptism is a powerful and moving step — a public declaration of faith and a joyful welcome into the family of the Church. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us to begin that conversation.
Godparents and Sponsors
Godparents (sometimes called sponsors) play a beautiful and important role in baptism. They stand alongside the parents and make promises to support the child in their Christian journey — praying for them, encouraging them in faith, and being a trusted Christian presence in their life as they grow up.
At St Augustine's we ask that godparents be baptised Christians, and ideally confirmed members of a church. Traditionally, a child has three godparents — two of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex — though this can be discussed with the priest. Godparents should be chosen thoughtfully: this is a lifelong commitment, not simply an honorary title.
When Baptisms Take Place
Most baptisms at St Augustine's take place at 11.15am on a Sunday, immediately following our main morning service. Families are warmly encouraged to attend the service beforehand — it is a wonderful way to experience the worshipping community your child is being welcomed into, and the congregation is always delighted to celebrate with you.
Please note that baptisms are not traditionally performed during Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter). However, exceptions can be made in certain circumstances, and we are happy to discuss this with you.
Getting Started
If you would like to arrange a baptism, please get in touch with us. We will arrange a meeting with the priest, who will be glad to get to know your family, answer any questions you may have, and help you prepare for this special occasion.
There is no charge for baptism. However, a donation to the church and to the priest is always gratefully received and warmly appreciated.
We look forward to hearing from you and walking with you through this significant step in the life of your family.
