Our Community
Hamilton is a riverside suburb with a rich history, shaped by its natural beauty, heritage, and vibrant community life. Originally the land of the Turrbal people, it was settled by Europeans in the early 19th century and developed into a neighbourhood known for its grand homes, schools, and community institutions. The arrival of the railway and the growth of the Port of Brisbane in the late 1800s brought new families, while many heritage streetscapes from this period remain, giving Hamilton its distinctive character.
St Augustine’s has been at the heart of this community for over a century. The parish has a long tradition of openness and engagement, and today seeks to honour that heritage while grounding life and worship firmly in Scripture and the historic faith of the Church. As a war memorial church, St Augustine’s commemorates those who served, and its stained glass windows, beautiful, intricate, and thought-provoking—invite reflection on God’s faithfulness, hope, and courage through the ages.
The parish is deeply engaged in the life of the suburb. Our monthly jumble sale is a much-loved tradition, bringing neighbours together, fostering fellowship, and supporting the mission of the church. St Augustine’s also provides pastoral care, education, and opportunities for service, helping people live faithfully and generously in the wider community
At the heart of St Augustine’s is strong biblical teaching and rich Anglican worship. Scripture is read carefully, preached faithfully, and applied thoughtfully; the liturgy shapes our hearts and minds week by week, while the sacraments connect us to God’s story and mission. The church has a strong choral tradition and a world-class pipe organ. The parish is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can belong, grow in faith, and be equipped to live as disciples of Christ. In Hamilton’s evolving landscape, St Augustine’s stands as a bridge between history and today, a parish rooted in the historic faith, attentive to Scripture, and committed to forming followers of Jesus for the world around us.
